The 25th AASSREC Biennial General Conference

The 25th AASSREC Biennial General Conference was hosted by the Korean Social Science Research Council (KOSSREC) and the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC) at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea from 14-15 June 2023.

AASSREC marked its 50th anniversary in 2023. Thus, KOSSREC would like to provide members with an opportunity to look back on Asian social sciences so far, discuss what role social sciences are currently playing in policymaking in each country, and what direction Asian social sciences should take in the future.

Session 1: Asian Social Sciences in the Past: The background of the introduction of social sciences and how it has developed in Asia.

Sessions 2, 3 & 4: Asian Social Sciences in the Present: Contending issues of social sciences, the discourse of social sciences, and the role of social sciences in policy making in each country.

Session 5 & 6: Asian Social Sciences in the Future: What direction should social sciences take in the future? How social sciences can contribute to society.

Malaysia was represented by PSSM leadership with the 2 papers below:

1. University Reform in Malaysia and the Role of Social Sciences in Higher Education by Professor Dr. Sity Daud, the President of Malaysian Social Science Association and Emeritus Professor Dato’ Abdul Rahman Embong, the Special Advisor to Malaysian Social Science Association; and

2. The Two Types of Social Sciences and Their Roles in Understanding and Guiding the Evolution of a Nation, with Special Reference to Malaysia by Professor Dr. Mohammad Hazim Shah, Vice President of Malaysian Social Science Association.
